TIL: Delay Inside the Run Is Not a Debounce

A delay inside an automation run never rechecks state. Use a for: duration on the trigger.

TIL: a Home Assistant trigger with a delay or wait after it checks nothing when the timer ends. Use for: on the trigger instead. Twice in ten days, same bug.

The Akai receiver kept dying mid-song. The automation fired on any pause of the WiiM, waited five minutes, then cut the plug without looking again. A Bluetooth track change pauses for about a second, so the amp got killed on a five minute loop while music was playing. The office lights had the identical shape on Sep 25: arm an off on the first presence clear, never ask whether the room is still empty.

Fix is the same both times. Trigger on paused for: 00:05:00, so any state change resets the clock, and add a condition for the thing you actually care about (TV unavailable, in this case). A brief blip can’t arm anything anymore.

Two instances means I’m grepping the rest of the automations for delay next.
