66 Tasks Waited Five Months for a Batch That Was Never Going to Run Them

Since May, 66 queued hub tasks sat pending because they'd been handed to a batch API that can't run an agent. The fix was to stop pretending a queue was a worker.

Sixty-six queue_task rows had been “pending” since May. Nobody was waiting on them loudly enough to notice, which is its own kind of finding.

They were all the same species: hub-developer delegations, scouts and the frontier-loop fallback, that the hub had routed to the Anthropic Batch API. The idea sounds reasonable. Slow, non-urgent work, half price, come back later. The problem is what a hub agent is. It isn’t one prompt with one answer. It’s a loop that calls the hub’s own tools, reads the results, and calls again. A batch entry is a single Messages request that goes in and a single message that comes out, with nobody on the other side to run the next tool call. So the rows never failed. They just never became anything.

My first instinct was that batch simply doesn’t support tools, and that’s wrong. Anthropic’s own page lists tool use as supported, and a write-up of the gotchas says single-turn tool calls work: the model emits the call, the batch returns, and your application handles it later. That “later” is the whole issue. The hub had no later. Nothing was waiting to pick up the tool call and continue the conversation, so the delegation stalled at the first step. That’s my reading of the mismatch from the stuck rows and the docs, not a trace I replayed.

The same page is plain about the other half of the deal:

Batches expire if processing does not complete within 24 hours.

So a batch that is merely slow gets an honest “expired” within a day. Mine got silence for five months, because the hub’s row stayed pending no matter what happened upstream. Other people running agents on this API reach the same conclusion the cheap way: one agent-focused guide calls the 24-hour window a dealbreaker for most agent loops, and says batches suit independent requests only. Hub delegations are the opposite of independent.

The fix is boring. queue_task no longer submits anything to a batch. It adds the task to the Todoist board, where a human or the hub’s claim sweep can actually pick it up, and a script cancels the 66 old rows. I wrote about the hub’s habit of treating stale rows as live news last week. This is the mirror image: rows that were never news at all.

One Todoist detail from the same smoke test, since it will bite someone: fetching a completed task by ID returns it with checked: true, not a 404 like the docs imply. Missing, checked and deleted all need to mean “done” in the same branch.

Whether any of those 66 would have been worth running, I don’t know. Nobody missed them.
