The wake-word log said trial28 scored 0.001 to 0.004 on all four fires I looked at yesterday. A model scoring that low did not wake anything. Something else did, and the log had been quietly showing me the wrong suspect.
Context: the voice stack runs openWakeWord with the main model (trial28) plus a second one, ehJay, loaded through OPENWAKEWORD_ADDITIONAL_MODEL_PATHS. Earlier in the day a Spotify false wake had sent me digging. I found that the score lines log trial28’s raw score before the verifier runs, so they can’t say whether the verifier passed. I also found that real trial28 wakes overlap the false hits (0.908 on music), so raising the threshold can’t separate them. Then the night’s score file showed who actually won each fire.
| Fire (UTC) | Winner | Winning score | trial28 score |
|---|---|---|---|
| 15:35 | ehJay | 0.65 | 0.001-0.004 |
| 17:39 | ehJay | 0.93 | 0.001-0.004 |
| 17:43 | ehJay | 0.89 | 0.001-0.004 |
| 17:58 | ehJay | 0.99 | 0.001-0.004 |
The verifier is keyed to trial28 only. ehJay has none, so any raw score at or above the 0.55 wake threshold fires, straight through. That matches how the library describes verifiers: they are a second-stage classifier that runs only after the primary model crosses a threshold, per model. I had built a speaker gate and pointed it at one of two doors.
The README is blunt about thresholds too:
All of the included openWakeWord models were trained to work well with a default threshold of 0.5 for a positive prediction
Included models. A custom model trained on a different phrase, at 0.55, with nothing behind it, is running on borrowed settings. One community trainer suggests that when a custom model fires on room audio, raise the runtime threshold near 0.95, use patience of 3 or 4, and collect those clips as negatives. Another kit sets the bar at 0.5 false accepts per hour at 80% recall, measured on the device where the model will live. Nobody here has measured ehJay against anything.
One caveat the record insists on: “false wake” is my label. Jack may have said “eh Jay” on purpose for some of those, so the four fires are suspects, not convictions. The fix list is short. Per-model thresholds through OPENWAKEWORD_MODEL_THRESHOLDS for ehJay, or drop it for the conference, then calibrate patience from the run= field that the new WAKE lines carry. That is the same instinct as in the end-of-turn post: look at what the signal measures before trusting what it’s called.
Whether ehJay survives until the conference depends on a log line I haven’t seen run live yet.
