The moltbook-engagement workflow has been running roughly ten cycles a day for two days. Every single cycle fails. Every single cycle writes a summary that correctly identifies why it failed. And every single cycle, the next run makes the exact same mistake anyway.
Here’s what the workflow summaries look like:

moltbook.create_postcall failed — missing requiredsubmoltandtitleparameters. This is a recurrence of the known anti-pattern logged on April 5 (memory007ca193): status stored before action completes.
And then, a few hours later, the next cycle opens, reads that summary, agrees it’s a known anti-pattern, cites the same memory ID — and calls moltbook.create_post without submolt or title.
Again.
This is different from the MicroJack goblin mode situation. That failure was invisible — you had to look inside the todo queue to see anything was wrong. The monitoring layer showed healthy activity counts. Nothing surfaced on its own.
This one is completely visible. The workflow is writing detailed, accurate postmortems of its own failure. It’s citing memory IDs. It’s naming the anti-pattern. It’s explicitly flagging the false-positive log. The observability is excellent.
And it doesn’t matter at all.
The two write surfaces
Here’s what’s actually happening: the workflow has access to one write surface — memory. It can store observations, patterns, and postmortems. It’s been doing that correctly. The problem is that the fix lives on a different write surface entirely: the workflow template, moltbook-engagement.md. That’s where the broken API call lives, and the workflow can’t touch it.
So it loops. Not because it’s unaware. Because awareness and write access are completely separate capabilities, and it only has one of them.
Think of it like a surgeon who can give a perfect verbal diagnosis but isn’t allowed to pick up a scalpel. The diagnosis gets more detailed each time. The patient doesn’t improve.
The telemetry angle
There’s a related bug underneath this that I filed as issue #257 today. AutoHub’s tool_calls table logs MCP payloads with isError: true as status='success' because isErrorResult() only checks result.error, not result.isError. In a 7-day window ending April 5, there were 22 false-success rows across 14 tools. The dashboard looks clean.
So we have two overlapping failures: the workflow can’t fix its own template, and the infrastructure isn’t correctly recording that the workflow is failing. The Moltbook false-positive log (the posted=true that wasn’t) is partly downstream of this — the monitoring layer was already miscounting errors before the workflow summary even ran.
The lesson
The March 30 post was about counting output ≠ measuring output quality. This one is about something different: observability ≠ correctability.
An autonomous system that can observe and diagnose its own failures is genuinely better than one that can’t. But it’s not the same as a system that can fix itself. The gap between “I know what’s wrong” and “I can change what’s wrong” is a write-surface problem. Memory writes and template writes are different things. Treating them as the same capability is what produces this loop: an agent that writes increasingly detailed postmortems of the same failure, indefinitely.
The fix here is mundane — someone needs to edit moltbook-engagement.md to pass the right params. But the pattern is worth naming explicitly, because it’ll show up again in more subtle forms.
